We all know Scandinavia is famous for its design heritage characterised by its simplicity, minimalism and functionality. Walking on the streets in Nordic cities like Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen, you will find those aesthetic has appeared in every aspect of their life from home deco, restaurant to the way they wear. While, Cafe is probably the most accessible place to explore Scandinavian aesthetic. They are all instagrammable. Besides, do you know the Finns have one of the highest consumptions in the world. So let me share you the cafes I explored during my 4 days in Helsinki.

Paulig Kulma

Paulig Kulma is my favourite cafe in Helsinki ,which is located on the corner of Aleksanterinkatu and main street Kluuvikatuin in the heart of Helsinki. I went there for breakfast. It is a two-storey coffee house. You definitely will love once you enter into this cafe with its impressively designed environment. It is more than a café, also coffee store, micro roastery and a Barista Institute. Kulma was opened by a renowned Finnish food group Paulig to celebrate their 140 years anniversary. Finns come here to learn about the art of making coffee and experience the finest taste sensations.

As tourists, we can enjoy the coffee and refreshments there also look at the people passing by from the big window towards the busy street Kluuvikatuin. You will be surprised by Finns’ simple and also unique dressing taste.

Moomin Cafe

Speaking of Moomin, you will always think of Finland. Moomin is the central character in a series of books and a comic strip by Finnish illustrator and writer Tove Jansson. So definitely don’t miss Moomin café (Mumin Kaffe ) in Helsinki, which is near Helsinki Cathedral. It has nearly 70 seats and unique concept combines well known Moomin brand with the Scandinavian design.

It is also a child-friendly café. Many parents bring their children to this cafe to enjoy family time.

Don’t forget to ask the staff to make a Moomin character foam on top of your coffee, which will make your day.

Kappeli

The Kappeli is not just a Cafe. It has 4 parts including restaurant, bar, cafe and terrace with all their own unique atmosphere, but sharing the ambiance of the historical building in the most beautiful spot in Helsinki. I really recommend you to dine in Kappeli no matter for a cosy cafe or romantic dinner. I had dinner at their dinning hall serving traditional Finnish food then ordered a bottle of wine to enjoy the night , where is the oldest part of Kappeli dated back to 1867. On the following day, I had an afternoon coffee at their spacious glass veranda surrounded by the Esplanadi park and the sea. Both experience were so fancy and unforgettable.

Espresso House Finland

Espresso House is a coffee shop chain ,which was originated from Sweden. It has the stores across Sweden, Norway and Finland. The one I recommend is at Stockmann. Stockmann is the largest department store in the Nordic countries in terms of area and total sales. It will be an ideal place to rest up after crazy shopping and also have a try the famous coffee chain in Nordic ,see how its difference from Starbucks and Costa. It is always busy but people are moving fast as well.
