Have you thought about yourself having prison life? Haha I would hope your answer is never! But in Helsinki, you will have the chance to spend the night at prison in a posh way! If visit Helsinki, stay in the renowned prison hotel, which is also one of must-to do in this city.
Hotel Katajanokka, the prison hotel I mentioned , is located on a small peninsula near to some of Helsinki’s main sights like golden-domed Uspenski Cathedral. Tram 4 stops right outside and just 10-15mins to the center. If you walk to center, it won’t take more than 20 mins.
When you look from outside, It is a red brick walls house. You won’t doubt it is a prison according to its outlooks. While, inside the old brick walls, a fascinating world of contrasts comes up. The red brick walls house 106 magnificent and luxurious rooms. Rooms stretch over two to three cells. The long corridors and iron railing are very prion style but with stylish decor and unique atmosphere.
Guests at Hotel Katajanokka have free sauna access and 24 hour modern gym. Restaurant Linnankellari is located in the basement of an old county jail, and offers Finno-Scandinavian local and organic food prepared of the finest ingredients. I have to say the breakfast is the best. I also had dinner there as the restaurant is quite renowned and gets a very high review. My opinion is just don’t miss the dinner there.
Why staying in prison makes me so excited. I guess my fascination to prisons comes from television shows and movies like Prison break. It is a mysterious place for me. What is really interesting is the hotel isn’t allowed to lock the doorways to the corridor as it’s a historical space — sort of like a museum. So basically, anyone is welcome to visit and admire the hallway as long as they respect the privacy of the hotel guests.
